Topping Out at Pentney Abbey

On Wednesday during a freezing cold morning, we had an informal topping out ceremony on the highest point of the gatehouse at Pentney.  At last, the scaffold is starting to come down, to reveal the most beautiful new stonework.  From left to right (standing) John Briggs, site foreman and stonemason, Mike Harris, quantity surveyor, Howard Barber, who has had builders living in his gatehouse for nearly a year, John Ette and Will Fletcher of English Heritage, Mike Whelton, the contracts manager from Universal Stone.  Sitting on the freezing cold but beautifully laid lead roof, clasping bottles of champagne – architect Ruth Brennan and Rob Parkinson of English Heritage.  My colleague and job runner Iain Walker is taking the picture.  Back a bit, back a bit…
